When I’m Feeling Angry by Trace Moroney is a gorgeous book with a flocked and embossed hardcover. 18 pages with colour illustrations throughout will delight your child and encourage their emotional development and expression.
“When you’re really angry you feel like you’re going to explode. It’s okay to be angry sometimes, as long as you don’t hurt anyone.”
Each of the books in this series has been carefully designed to help children better understand their feelings, and in doing so, gain greater autonomy over their lives.
Talking about feelings teaches children that it is normal to feel sad, or angry, or scared at times. With greater tolerance of painful feelings, children become free to enjoy their world, to feel secure in their abilities, and to be happy.
What do you do when your child is feeling angry? In Notes for Parents at the back of the book, a child psychologist offers some helpful insights.
Extend Play and Learning
Once you have read the book, ask your child what makes them feel angry. Share with them what makes you feel angry also. Discuss ways that they can start to regulate their anger and reflect on the strategies suggested in the book. Ask them what they are going to do next time they are angry to calm themselves down. When this happens, help them recall their plan of action.
